Background

Optimizing User-Moderation Interaction // CurseForge

CurseForge by Overwolf is the leading UGC platform for both Content Creators and Gamers.

I designed a new User-Moderation interaction flow and features based on Author’s pain points with interacting with Moderation.

Mission

Preparing for a greater games variety

At CurseForge, one of our key missions in 2023 was to prepare our platform for more games.

In order to do that, we had to make sure both our platform and teams have the capacity to support the moderation requirements for each game.

KPI's
  1. Scalability – support 80% of target games’ moderation requirements
  2. Minimize effort from users (Mod Authors)
  3. Reduce Moderation tickets
Research

Users’ pain with our Moderation flow

In order to understand how to minimize users effort throughout their interaction with moderation,
we first had to understand where users have difficulties with the current flow.

I created and distributed a Typeform questionnaire of 8 concise multi-choice questions and 1 open feedback question, to a group of selected (active) users.

Planning

From insights to planning

After collecting and summarizing users pain points around their interaction with moderators, I presented the results to stakeholders, and together we planned short-term and long-term strategies.

For the next quarter, we decided to focus on highly requested solutions that don’t add to our Moderation and Support teams’ work:

Preventative information

Reduce avoidable mistakes with proper information

Intuitive Push Notifications

Scan project update faster

A Better Notification Panel

Navigate and manage older notifications

Design

Clear, informative guidelines

To minimize development efforts and increase user adaptation, the design relies on existing components, while focusing on providing clear information.

After collecting and summarizing users pain points around their interaction with moderators, I presented the results to stakeholders, and together we planned short-term and long-term strategies.

Results

Major reduction in content-related tickets

We don’t have exact numbers due to limited data. However, one moderator, Noam V, reported a clear drop in tickets from authors who were confused about moderation guidelines or feedback.

This was observed over the next quarter, during which no other changes were made to the Authors Console, suggesting the update helped authors better understand moderation guidelines and feedback on their own.
