Optimizing User-Moderation Interaction // CurseForge

CurseForge by Overwolf is the leading UGC platform for both Content Creators and Gamers.

In August ‘23,I began researching Author’s pain points around the interaction with our moderation team. Finally, I designed a new User-Moderation interaction flow and features, which are to be implemented by ‘24.

At CurseForge, one of our key missions in 2023 was to prepare our platform for more games.

In order to do that, we had to make sure both our platform and teams have the capacity to support the moderation requirements for each game.

KPI's
  1. Scalability – support 80% of target games’ moderation requirements
  2. Minimize effort from users (Mod Authors)
  3. Not add to our Moderationa & Support teams’ work

Researching users’ pain with our Moderation flow

In order to understand how to minimize users effort throughout their interaction with moderation,
we first had to understand where users have difficulties with the current flow.

I created and distributed a Typeform questionnaire of 8 concise multi-choice questions and 1 open feedback question, to a group of selected (active) users.

From insights to planning

After collecting and summarizing users pain points around their interaction with moderators, I presented the results to stakeholders, and together we planned short-term and long-term strategies.

Short term

For the next quarter, we decided to focus on highly requested solutions that don’t add to our Moderation and Support teams’ work:

Preventative information

Help users avoid making mistakes in the first place

Intuitive Push Notifications

Help users scan updates on their projects faster

A Better Notification Panel

Enable users to navigate and manage older notifications

The designs

In order to minimize development efforts and increase user adaptation, I tried to rely on existing components as much as possible while still delivering the value.

My additional mission was to create a scalable Activity log that could serve different types of information in the future (such as: content suggestions, boosting tips, and more).

Next step: User testing

The next step in our roadmap is to test these designs on users before breaking it down to iterations.

Thanks to the routine user interviews initiative that I’m leading in our team, we’re able to test, improve, and approve in just a few weeks before handing off to our developers.
